Budget Deficit Surges to $113.9 Billion

    Mar 10, 6:07 PM

By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON - The federal government ran a record monthly deficit of $113.9 billion in February, a sizable worsening of the budget picture compared to a rare surplus recorded in January, the Treasury Department (news - web sites) reported Thursday.

However, even with the February deficit, the red ink for the first five months of the budget year is running 2.2 percent below the red ink for the same period a year ago. The total deficit from October through February this year was $223.4 billion compared to $228.5 billion for the previous period.

The Bush administration is projecting that this year's federal deficit will hit an all-time high in dollar terms of $427 billion, surpassing last year's record of $412.8 billion.

However, the Congressional Budget Office (news - web sites) is projecting a lower deficit for this year of $394 billion, including Bush's supplemental requests to Congress for funding the Iraq (news - web sites) war, and many private economists are also forecasting that this year's deficit will be slightly lower than last year's record.

The budget plan President Bush (news - web sites) sent to Congress on Feb. 7 projects that deficits after this year will gradually decline until they hit $233 billion in 2009, the year that the administration has pledged it will cut the deficit in half as a proportion of the total economy. Last year's deficit was 3.6 percent of the economy and the 2009 deficit is projected to be 1.5 percent of the total economy.

Republicans on the House and Senate budget committees unveiled their own spending plans this week. Those plans, which are similar to the administration's, would shrink the record deficits over the next five years by trimming domestic spending while cutting taxes and boosting outlays in such areas as defense and anti-terrorism.

The $113.9 billion monthly deficit in February followed a rare surplus of $8.6 billion in January. The big swing occurred on the revenue side as receipts fell to $100.9 billion in February after having hit $202.2 billion in January, a month in which the government's coffers are swelled by quarterly tax payments.

Spending in February rose to $214.8 billion, up 10.9 percent from outlays of $193.6 billion in January.

Does this remind you of someone with their 1st credit card ? Just piling on the bills with no realization that someday soon they will come due.

How long before the bill collecters come knocking?

This is what happens when you elect an open borders, economically inept big business crony to run the White House. This clown had to sell several of his companies including the Texas Rangers to avoid bankruptcy. This guy doesn't know what he's doing. This rich elitiest has had the silver spoon shoved in his mouth since day one of his birth. He's never had to work for anything. His daddy just handed it all to him. He got into Yale and Havard because of his dad. His SAT scores were a joke and he was a C student at best. I also think that he either doesn't have it all there (which is probably more then likely) and it's very possible that somebody very powerful (maybe Vicente Fox himself) has some really bad dirt on Bush and is blackmailing him into doing some terrible things because quite frankly I've never seen a president this obsessed with caving into Mexico's demands. Even Republican Senators who worship this guy can't believe how low he's going and how far he's taking this.

Bush W is daddies little boy. The Iraq war was to finish what his father started. Nafta and free trade was his daddies little pet projects. His daddy was a big time open borders guy himself. It's all going to end with no borders and no sovereignty at all and we'll all be subjected to the rule of big business and Mexican elites. Don't believe me, keep watching.

I mean giving another countries leader a couple of perks for doing us favors is one thing, but this president is caving into a corrupt bloated crime infested third world rat hole who has done nothing for us at the expense of our own country. The same country who's people and leaders show nothing, but hate and contempt for our sovereignty. This guy is running us into the ground and he just doens't care. We are getting destroyed from within, plain and simple. He doesn't listen to us no matter what. We keep demanding that he stops the invasion, nothing. We keep demanding that he reign in this out of control spending, nothing. We keep demanding that he secure our borders, enforce our laws and stop giving our tax dollar benefits to invaders, nothing.

How much more money do we have to lose? How many more towns, counties, cities and states have to sustain a sharp decline in quality of life? How many more jobs do we have to lose? How many more hospitals have to get shut down? How many more people have to die before we say enough is enough? How many more invaders do we have to import before we stop the madness? What is the magic number? One million? 10 million? 50 million? 100 million? 1 billion? Where do we draw the line with the benefits before we realize that we can no longer afford to subsidize the invasion? We give them drivers licenses, jobs, voting rights, in-state tuition, housing, lawyers. How many more rights do we have to give illegal aliens at the expense of our own rights before we say no mas? What's next? Hate crimes legislation for illegal aliens? I better not say it, it probably will happen.

I'm tired of hearing about how Mexico is our friend and ally. It's all a big lie and i'm sick to death of it. Nobodies buying this crap.

YOU EMPTY SUITS NEED TO STOP TELLING US HOW WONDERFUL EVERYTHING IS, STOP WITH THIS HAIL GEORGE BUSH CRAP, GET OFF YOUR LAZY, CORRUPT, WAY OVERPAID BUTTS AND DEFEND OUR HOMELAND YOU COWARDS. YOU BUREAUCRATS WORK FOR US, NOT FOR MEXICO.
